The Galápagos Islands rise from the eastern Pacific roughly a thousand kilometers west of mainland Ecuador. They are volcanic, geologically young, and scattered across enough ocean to make movement between islands difficult for many species.

Life arrived by air, sea, accident, and endurance. Once established, populations encountered different foods, climates, competitors, and degrees of isolation.

Why islands reveal change

Island biogeography turns distribution into evidence. A species may resemble a mainland ancestor while differing from relatives on a neighboring island, suggesting colonization followed by local change.

Darwin noticed some of these patterns in 1835, although later taxonomic work made their implications clearer. The archipelago did not prove evolution by itself; it provided a particularly legible set of comparisons.

A living place, not just a metaphor

The islands are often reduced to a backdrop for one European visitor. Their history also includes Indigenous knowledge of Pacific navigation, Ecuadorian settlement, extractive industries, conservation, tourism, and continuing scientific work.

That larger history keeps the Galápagos from becoming a frozen nineteenth-century symbol. It remains an inhabited and vulnerable ecosystem.
