Privacy

Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 15, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Iguanaverse collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you visit iguanaverse.com, read our publications, search the site, interact with advertisements, or join an email list.

Iguanaverse is responsible for the first-party information practices described below. Google and other service providers are responsible for their own processing under their respective privacy policies.

1. Information we collect

Website engagement statistics

We collect limited first-party events to understand how the website is used and improve its stories and discovery features. These records may include:

  • the page path and publication or article identifier;
  • page views and reading-depth milestones;
  • internal links, search results, advertisements, and other site features you interact with;
  • the length of a search query, but not the words you type;
  • device category, such as mobile or desktop;
  • the referring website’s origin, when supplied by your browser; and
  • a randomly generated page-session identifier and the time the event was received.

Our first-party engagement-event dataset does not store your IP address, full referrer URL, name, email address, precise location, or persistent advertising identifier. The page-session identifier is generated in your browser and is not stored in a first-party cookie.

Email subscriptions and communications

If you join the History Iguana Dispatch, we collect the email address you provide, the date and time of subscription, and the page where you subscribed. If you contact us, we receive the information contained in your message and any information you choose to provide.

Hosting and security information

Our hosting, network, and security providers necessarily process technical information needed to deliver and protect the website. This can include IP address, requested URL, browser or device information, timestamps, and diagnostic or security records. These operational records are separate from the first-party engagement dataset described above.

2. How we use information

We use information to operate and secure Iguanaverse; understand which stories and connections are useful; improve navigation, search, performance, and editorial planning; measure advertisement visibility; maintain subscription records; respond to messages and privacy requests; detect misuse; and comply with legal obligations.

Where applicable law requires a lawful basis, we rely on our legitimate interests in operating, securing, and improving the website; your consent for email communications and for advertising technologies where consent is required; performance of a service you request; and compliance with legal obligations.

3. Advertising, cookies, and similar technologies

Iguanaverse uses Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, may place or read cookies, use web beacons, process IP addresses, or use other identifiers when advertisements are requested or displayed. Google and its partners may use advertising cookies to select, personalize, limit, and measure ads based on visits to Iguanaverse or other websites, subject to your settings and applicable consent choices.

You can learn how Google uses information from partner sites in Google’s partner-sites notice. You can manage personalized advertising through Google Ads Settings and may opt out of participating third-party vendors through YourAdChoices. Browser controls can also block or delete cookies, although doing so may affect site or advertising functionality.

Where required, Google or a consent-management provider may present choices concerning advertising cookies, personalization, and data use. The options available depend on your location, browser, and the advertising services active at the time.

4. When information is shared

We may share information with hosting, infrastructure, analytics-storage, email-delivery, security, and other vendors that process information for us; with Google and advertising partners as described above; when required by law or reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety, and security; or as part of a merger, acquisition, financing, or transfer of the website, subject to appropriate safeguards.

We do not sell or rent newsletter email addresses. Some privacy laws may define certain disclosures for personalized advertising as “selling,” “sharing,” or targeted advertising even when no money is exchanged. Where those laws apply, available consent or opt-out controls can be used to communicate your choice.

5. Data retention

We retain information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including security, recordkeeping, dispute resolution, and legal compliance. Newsletter subscription records are generally kept until you unsubscribe or request deletion, subject to any limited suppression record needed to honor that request. Operational logs and first-party engagement records may be aggregated, anonymized, rotated, or deleted when no longer needed.

6. Your choices and privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of personal information; restrict or object to certain processing; withdraw consent; opt out of targeted advertising or qualifying sales or sharing; and appeal or complain to a data-protection authority. You will not be discriminated against for exercising an applicable privacy right.

Because the engagement dataset is not connected to a name, email address, persistent cookie, or stored IP address, we may be unable to identify a particular anonymous event as yours. We can act on subscription records using the email address associated with them.

To unsubscribe or submit a privacy request, email hello@iguanaverse.com with “Privacy Request” in the subject line. We may need to verify your request and may retain information where permitted or required by law.

7. International processing

Iguanaverse and its providers may process information in countries other than the one where you live. Those countries may have different data-protection laws. Where required, providers use recognized safeguards for international transfers.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures intended to protect information, including restricted service access and protected storage for first-party analytics and subscription data. No online service or storage system can be guaranteed completely secure.

9. Children’s privacy

Iguanaverse is a general-audience publication and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can review and delete it where appropriate.

10. External links

Articles may link to archives, museums, source documents, and other third-party websites. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this one.

11. Changes to this policy

We may revise this policy when the website, its providers, or legal requirements change. The effective date above will be updated when a revised policy is posted. Material changes may also be highlighted on the website.
